The spotlight is on Don’t Worry Darling right away. Not only does it mark Olivia Wilde’s return to directing following her 2019 debut with Booksmart, but during the production of the movie, the actress and main actor Harry Styles appear to have fallen in love, which is reported to have led to a number of conflicts with the cast.
The movie, which will open theaters on September 22, is now having its world debut at the Venice Film Festival, where it has received mixed reviews (for Styles’ performance) and favorable reviews (for Wilde’s contribution). Curlycurl attempts to provide some clarity by summarizing all the information we are aware of regarding Don’t Worry Darling because juggling the numerous technical or gossipy details is not that simple.
The movie
Olivia Wilde casts a huge cast of young actors, including Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Gemma Chan, KiKi Layne, and Nick Kroll, in her second feature film, a psychological thriller with dystopian undertones. The story seems intriguing: Alice (Pugh) and Jack (Styles) are newlyweds living in the experimental village of Victory in the 1950s. Victory is run by a sort of guru (Pine), who solves every element of daily life in this utopian paradise in the midst of the desert. Even while everything seems ideal, the young bride notices something is off when a local woman goes missing and starts to look into it, which reveals a deadly truth. Don’t Worry Darling may appear to be a straightforward thriller from reading this synopsis and viewing the early trailers, but according to Wilde, it is actually a feminist parable, a movie about power and the abuse of power that also raises issues with problematic nostalgia and casts doubt on the Make America Great era by highlighting the flaws in the American system in ways that are both entertaining and purposefully provocative.
The sex scenes
People have been discussing the intense sex scenes between Harry Styles and Florence Pugh (some of which were cut because they were deemed too hot for a teaser) ever since the first trailer for Don’t Worry Darling aired during CinemaCon 2022. Styles’ character engages in oral sex with Pugh’s character on the dining room table in a sequence that was apparently influenced by Adrian Lyne’s sensual thrillers Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal. Other instances of feminine pleasure can also be found throughout the narrative. When asked about it, Pugh always declined to comment, but recently, during an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, he explained that all this morbid curiosity (primarily sparked by the fame of his co-star) detracts from the movie’s actual plot and the skill of those who worked on it, both in front of and behind the camera.
Florence vs Olivia
First to arrive are Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Gemma Chang, and Olivia Wilde. There is no Florence Pugh. The actress, who skipped the whole Don’t Worry Darling promotional tour, also skipped the press presentation for the movie in Venice, feeding speculation that she and Wilde were at odds. The Midsommar actress’ whereabouts were attempted to be inquired of by one of the present reporters. The director’s response, that Florence Pugh claims to be preoccupied with the filming of Dune 2, but this explanation seems to be a lie given because Timothée Chalamet also works on the set of Denis Villeneuve’s movie and that the actor was recently in Laguna Beach to promote Bones and All. Most importantly, Pugh was spotted drinking Spritz almost simultaneously with Olivia and there are social media pictures to prove it. What, however, is actually happening between the two stars? The gossip website Page Six stated in July that Florence Pugh was embarrassed when Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde were using a pda (public display of affection)on the shoot. At the time, Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis were still associated. Florence (as well as the rest of the ensemble) was unfazed about the director’s extramarital romance and opted to spend time with beautiful Harry rather than behind the camera, which may have distracted her from her job. Whether they are true or not, the rumors about Harry and Olivia’s romance and their disagreement with Pugh are catching everyone’s attention and casting a shadow over the film and its real worth. This is one of the reasons the star of Little Women decided not to promote the movie on her social media pages where she is usually very active.
The red carpet
People who were hoping to see Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde walking side by side or maybe hand in hand on the Venice red carpet were let down. The two, who are a real-life couple and co-stars in the movie, hardly spoke to one another while they were seated apart at the premiere (between them was an “pissed off” and increasingly Brad Pitt-like Chris Pine, who some say even got a spit from Harry). Style preferred to kiss fellow actor Nick Kroll to divert attention from their love tale. Harry Styles chose a 70s-inspired look, wearing a custom-made blue double-breasted jacket, a light blue shirt with an oversized and extremely pointed collar, flared slacks, and booties from the Gucci HA HA collection. Florence Pugh donned a Valentino dress with Tiffany & Co. jewelry, while Olivia Wilde also wore Gucci. Olivia Wilde wore a custom-made yellow chiffon dress with organza flower embellishments and crystal embroidery.
