Fans had long suspected Velma Dinkley to be a lesbian, but it is finally confirmed. The new Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo movie trailer, which is now making the rounds on social media amid positive comments from the LGBTQ+ community and everyone who grew up exploring with the ramshackle Mystery gang, reveals this. The Mystery & Related genius is shown in a scenario waiting for the upcoming adventure of Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma, which will be released just in time for Halloween, dumbfounded in front of costume designer Coco Diablo. Velma is instantly recognizable in her all-orange ensemble, schoolgirl socks, and ubiquitous glasses. It only takes a quick glance for Velma to blush at the sight of her new persona and to take in all of her attributes, from her stunning turtleneck to her fantastic glasses, from her brilliant mind to her love for animals.
The Scooby-Doo world has produced several works that have openly discussed Velma’s sexual orientation before the movie that was released in the United States on October 4 is not the first. By stating that Velma is not bisexual and that she acted out when she dated Shaggy as a way to demonstrate that “that relationship was not working for her and that it was hard for her to understand the reasons for that difficulty first,” the animated series’ supervising producer Tony Cervone revealed on Instagram that he had already attempted to make her homosexuality more explicit. Director James Gunn intended to include a kiss between Velma and Daphne in the popular live-action version of the early 2000s in order to highlight Velma’s sexual orientation and give the LGBTQ+ community a voice. However, the production “kept diluting that part of the script until Velma’s homosexuality became an ambiguous thing in the final shot, then it just disappeared in the version of the film that came to theaters, and in the sequel she even had a boyfriend.” Now, however, Gunn and I are glad that things have evolved and the Hanna-Barbera character is allowed to live her sexuality openly.
